The discovery of asbestos has caused business to grind to a halt at Stratford Town Hall.
Mayor Jim Miron said the problem was uncovered while workers were replacing carpet and found tile underneath. "We knew based on the age of the tiles there was a likelihood they might have asbestos in them," Miron said.
The tiles tested positive for asbestos, but officials maintain subsequent air quality tests found no traces of the potentially cancer-causing substance.
The area, located close to where council members sit, is now closed off. Miron hopes to have the remediation work completed by Friday. However, he admits it may be done sometime next week.
