Avelo Airlines announced Wednesday that it will close three bases, including in Mesa, AZ, which was used for deportation flights.

The airline said the Mesa base will close on 27.

As result of that closure, the company said it will no longer participate in the Department of Homeland Security's charter program that deported illegal immigrants.

"The program provided short-term benefits but ultimately did not deliver enough consistent and predictable revenue to overcome its operational complexity and costs," said Courtney Goff, communications manager.

The other bases closing are in Raleigh-Durham, NC, and Wilmington, NC.

Customers will still be able to fly to both cities from Tweed-New Haven Airport.

Avelo will direct contact flyers impacted by these changes by email and text.

The airline will continue to operate its base at Tweed, along with three other locations. It plans to open a base in Dallas-McKenny, TX later this year.

Tweed is Avelo's largest base and offers service to 24 nonstop destinations.

Although no deportation flights left from Tweed, there were multiple protests at the airport in response to the company's decision.
