Barbara Smyth claimed victory in the Democratic primary for mayor of Norwalk on Tuesday, defeating fellow Common Council member Darlene Young by a margin of 75 votes, according to unofficial results.

Smyth, the party-endorsed candidate, received 1,504 votes to Young’s 1,429.

Longtime Mayor Harry Rilling said he will not be seeking reelection.

Both Smyth and Young currently serve on the city’s Common Council and have led their campaigns on strengthening the community.

In a statement following her victory, Smyth thanked Young for a “fair race” and expressed gratitude to her campaign team and volunteers.

“I am thrilled that the Democrats of Norwalk placed their confidence in me tonight,” Smyth said. “There is no win without them, and I will forever be grateful for their hard work and trust in my vision for Norwalk.”

Smyth said her campaign will continue engaging voters across the city in the lead-up to November.

“The message we are hearing is clear: Norwalkers want a government committed to creating a sustainable, vibrant community that is inclusive to all people,” she said. “Together with the rest of the Democratic slate, we will fight to win in November to ensure that Donald Trump’s MAGA policies have no place in our city.”

Norwalk was one of 21 municipalities across Connecticut holding primary elections Tuesday. Smyth will now advance to the general election in November.
