Security was stepped up in all three Bridgeport high schools Thursday after two students were arrested for bringing handguns to class.
Students at Bassick High School were greeted by metal detectors. The detectors are monitored by school security guards and school police officers. The move comes after a student tipped off security Wednesday that a classmate was carrying a gun. Security guards seized the weapon and the 16-year-old was arrested.
On Monday, a student at Roosevelt School was also arrested for bringing a loaded gun to school. Police say the 13-year-old had it in his backpack.
The director of security says there are no immediate plans to add metal detectors to the middle schools.
