Thousands of face masks were given out at the Beardsley Zoo to ensure a safe experience for Monday's reopening.
State and local leaders came out to distribute the masks in an effort to let residents know that the almost century-old landmark is marking a milestone moment responsibly.
"We're giving out masks to make sure that people can enjoy it," says Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim. "But enjoy the zoo and everything we do safely.
Gregg Dancho, who has been director of the Beardsley Zoo for 40 years, is encouraging all visitors to wear their masks, wash their hands and social distance.
"We want everybody to be safe," Dancho says. "Safe is the word."
Sen. Richard Blumenthal says the zoo will also benefit from relief packages from Congress.
As part of the safety efforts, those looking to go to the zoo have to buy their tickets online.
