Lloyd’s Carrot Cake in Riverdale reopened, just in time for Thanksgiving.
The iconic and beloved staple temporarily closed on Aug. 9 for a much-needed renovation. The reopening had been delayed due to the renovation and equipment.
In the nick of time, the store announced its ovens were up and running, and freshly baked carrot cakes were ready on Monday on a first come, first serve basis.
Customers wasted no time, with a line spanning Broadway on Tuesday afternoon.
"You don't know how happy we were when I called yesterday and someone picked up! It was like, ' Oh, it's Thanksgiving,'" said Cee Cee Holmes, who traveled from Staten Island.
The recipe crafted by late-owner Lloyd Adams has stolen the taste buds of people from all over the tri-state area.
"I think this is probably my fourth year, but I have stood outside in line - it's like going to a night club, except you don't come home with a hangover you come home with a carrot cake," said Robert Griffith, from New Rochelle.
Jerry Lewis waited in line on Tuesday afternoon. Lewis said he worked at the bakery when he was 16 years old, and it's become a tradition to come back each holiday for a cake.
"Before I worked here, I didn't like carrot cake, then I was a lover of carrot cake, Lloyd's Carrot Cake. Lloyd was a great man I learned a lot from him," said Lewis.
Lloyd's Carrot Cake opened its Bronx location in 1986. Adams' children have since taken over the operation since his passing in 2007.
The Bronx location will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.on Wednesday with limited availability. It will be closed on Thanksgiving.
