A wake was held in New Canaan Monday for the Norwalk Fire Department's longtime chaplain Monsignor William Scheyd.

"He was always there for us, day after day, year after year -- and we all loved him and respected him and will miss him," Norwalk Fire Lt. Scott Rywolt told News 12 Monday, on the eve of Schyed's funeral.

A Mass of Christian burial will take place in memory of the 85-year-old priest at Saint Aloysius Church in New Canaan at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

"Monsignor Scheyd was such a kind and devoted person and it's heartbreaking to say farewell to him," Rywolt said.

Scheyd passed away last week after serving the Norwalk Fire Department for 56 years, Rywolt said.
