Bethany's first selectman has announced plans to resign following concerns that she failed to act fast enough over accusations of sexual abuse by a town employee.

There had been growing calls for First Selectman Paula Cofrancesco to resign.

An investigation found town officials knew about allegations against Anthony Mastrangelo but let him continue working at the town's Parks and Rec summer camps while an investigation was underway. Mastrangelo was arrested last year charged in the abuse of five young girls.

Cofrancesco says she'll step down despite disagreeing with the findings of the investigation.

"I have always acted in the best interest of the town of Bethany, and while I disagree with the findings of the recent report as to my conduct, I recognize that my continuing as first selectwoman will be a distraction to the important business that needs to be done," she said in a brief statement.

The crowd erupted in cheers and clapping when Cofrancesco made her announcement.

Her resignation goes into effect on June 6.
