A western Connecticut family, now living in South Carolina, managed to get out of harm's before Hurricane Florence hit.
Tom Renner and his wife Robin lived in Bethel for more than 30 years but decided to downsize and move to South Carolina a month and a half ago.
His wife accepted a new teaching job there, while he works remotely for a Stamford marketing company.
They've been renting a home on Surfside Beach, but had to pack up everything once again.
They're now staying in a hotel in Swainsboro, Georgia, four hours away.
Renner says some of his neighbors are staying put and hoping for the best.
He says his two daughters, one at UNC-Wilmington and one in Fredericksburg, Virginia, also moved to safer areas.
Renner says his biggest concern is flooding.
"We accepted that responsibility and knew that at some point during our life down here we were going to have to deal with hurricanes,” Renner says. “We did not figure that it would be six weeks into our life down here that it would be the mother of all hurricanes."
Renner says they still don't question their decision to move. He says one hurricane every 10 years not is still not as bad as the six or seven snowstorms they've dealt with every winter in Connecticut.
Renner says he hopes to return to Surfside Beach this weekend to check out the damage.
