Thousands of high school basketball games are played every winter, but Friday night's games in Fairfield were special.
Four area boys and girls basketball teams competed under the lights at Mahoney Arena to raise money for Make-A-Wish Connecticut.
"It’s fantastic," says Lauralton Hall athletic director Chris Lindwall. "I think a lot of teams are doing these types of games."
Nicky Eklund, whose wish was granted by the organization back in 2014, performed the national anthem prior to both games.
"I love that I can share the things that normal words can’t say on their own," Eklund says. "Make-A-Wish gave me something to look forward to, something to fight for, and helped me in my recovery."
Lindwall is hoping to make these games an annual tradition.
"Our kids — and especially this generation of kids — need to understand that we need to help each other," Lindwall says. "If we continue to do that, things will always get better."
Lauralton Hall squared off against Shelton in the girls' game, while Fairfield Prep battled North Haven in the boys contest.
Money raised will help grant a wish to a local Fairfield child battling a critical illness.
