U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal is asking President Donald Trump to answer the request for a disaster declaration in Brookfield more than two months after May's damaging storms.
Blumenthal took a tour of the affected area to gather evidence for the case. He hopes that money from the federal government will help assist in reimbursing the costs residents and the town incurred right after the storms.
Earlier this week, Blumenthal and the Connecticut Congressional Delegation wrote to the president, insisting that he grant Gov. Dannel Malloy's request for the declaration. The aid can cover up to 75 percent of the costs not covered by insurance. Although most of the roads are cleared, there are still trees down and home that are destroyed.
"If you came to this community and you saw the trees down, the homes damaged, the roads overturned, you saw real disaster," the senator says. "That's what we are asking the federal government and the president to recognize, and disasters cost money."
Brookfield has already paid for over $4 million worth of damage, and the cleanup still isn't done. Once they money is granted, residents and the town will be able to apply for reimbursement.
