Four Bridgeport police officers rescued a man who was threatening to jump off a Route 8 overpass – and their body cam video shows just how they did it.
Officers Jesse Meade, Steven Caldwell, David Neary and Sgt. Robert Knapp worked as a team late Wednesday night to save the man's life while he was perched outside the bridge’s railing on Congress Street.
The four officers, one of them a trained negotiator, calmed the man down by speaking in his native Spanish. They were then able to pull him to safety.
Sgt. Joel Carley says the officers did an amazing job of de-escalating the situation by using tactics they learned in their training to win the man’s trust.
Mayor Joe Ganim says he would like to “commend these officers.”
"It's so nice to see this type of story where you can say ‘thank you’ to an officer for saving a life," says the mayor.
Police say the man had been suicidal for the past two months and was taken to St. Vincent's Medical Center for a psychiatric evaluation.
