First responders spent hours at the base of the Stevenson Dam Monday afternoon, as dive teams used underwater cameras to locate and recover a body.
Monroe police say they received a call around 3:30 p.m. about a person in distress in the water below the dam.
State police, DEEP, Newtown’s Water Rescue Team and the Monroe/Trumbull dive team, along with the Oxford and Stevenson fire departments, all helped with the search.
People who went to Lake Zoar for some peace and quiet say they were shocked to hear what had happened.
“I would feel like it probably would be an accident just because it’s summertime and there’s so many things that can go wrong,” says Grace Tiddei, of Bethany. “I would just hope the family gets answers quickly, so they’re not left wondering.”
Monroe police says the body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
