Stamford police say the body of a missing 55-year-old man was found in the water at Cove Island Park with suspicious canisters, forcing the closure of the area.
The Stamford Police Department was called to Cove Island Park around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday while investigating a report of a missing Stamford resident.
The missing man's car was discovered at Cove Island Park, and police searched the park using the department’s K-9 unit.
During the search, the body of the man was discovered in the water. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The medical examiner’s office also responded to the scene. During an initial examination of the body, two suspicious canisters were discovered on the man's body.
Police say the park was evacuated and closed when the canisters were found.
The department's bomb squad unit was called to the scene. News 12 is told the canisters looked like pipes and had lead balls in them but no explosives.
The cause of death is still under investigation, but police say it’s not believed to be suspicious.
