NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton is speaking out against some of his fellow police officers after they publicly showed their discontent for the mayor.
A number of officers turned their backs to Mayor Bill de Blasio while he eulogized slain NYPD Officer Rafael Ramos during his funeral Saturday. They were among the thousands of officers from across the nation watching the mayor's remarks on large televisions outside the church where the service was held.
Bratton spoke as a guest on CBS' "Face the Nation" Sunday morning, where he said it was "very inappropriate" for the officers to turn their backs.
The gesture was in response to what some officers call de Blasio's disrespect for the police department. Critics say the mayor created an anti-police sentiment that facilitated the brazen shooting of Officer Ramos and his partner, Officer Wenjian Liu.
Bratton says Ramos' funeral was not the right place for the officers' statement. He went on to defend de Blasio, saying he is "totally supportive" of the NYPD.
The mayor has been criticized by some as too supportive of protesters rallying against police.
