A Bridgeport church is stepping up to help families from Haiti and Syria whose loved ones have been deported.
Summerfield United Methodist Church hosted a Day of Service event that provided free school supplies and other basic necessities to families in need.
Organizers said the support comes at a critical time for families facing uncertainty and financial challenges.
"The Haitian community is having a hard time, so we are here to help them," said Dionne Lamothe of Haitian Heritage Awareness of Connecticut.
Church leaders said the event was designed to provide both practical assistance and a sense of community.
"When you see that someone is in danger or a group of people are being attacked, we are responding at the local level with compassionate hearts and compassionate hands," said Rev. Dr. Herron K. Gaston of Summerfield United Methodist Church.
Organizers thanked the volunteers and donors who helped make the event possible.
