Hundreds of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) workers and top state officials gathered at the Luz De Paz Funeral Home in Bridgeport on Friday to say their final goodbyes to 60-year-old Elvin Hernandez.
The Bridgeport resident and DOT employee was killed one week ago on Interstate 95 South near Fairfield when an allegedly impaired driver veered onto the shoulder and struck him while he was clearing highway debris.
In a powerful tribute, fellow DOT workers wearing high-visibility yellow safety vests formed a solemn guard of honor alongside rows of parked department trucks filling the surrounding city blocks.
U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal praised Hernandez for dedicating his life to road safety, calling for more rigorous enforcement of "Slow Down, Move Over" laws in his memory.
Following the services, Hernandez was laid to rest in a ceremony at Mt. Grove Easton Cemetery.
Edward Myers, 60, of Derby, is facing charges stemming from the fatal crash.
