A statue of Christopher Columbus in Bridgeport's Seaside Park is at the center of a resolution being drafted by a city councilman.

Councilman Jorge Cruz says he's drafting a resolution that will condemn the legacy of the Italian explorer, but allow his statue to remain in place at Seaside Park, "at least for now."

Cruz is criticizing Columbus for his treatment of the native communities, and is calling for statues of MLK and a yet-to-be decided Native American to be put up near the arches at Seaside Park.

"I'm willing to compromise for the sake of peace and unity, as I always speak about unity, to leave it there, live with it but at the same time I want to see for the first residents of Bridgeport, the Golden Hill Paugusset tribe honored with their very own stature here in Seaside Park and one of Martin Luther King," says Cruz.

"Being the tribal leader of the Golden Hill Pauqusset Tribe, I think it's time that we deserve being that we were the first original people here to have our own statue," says Shoran Waupatquay Piper.

Chris Caruso, of the Council of Italian American Societies of Connecticut says he will have to read the resolution carefully, once it's completed, and meet with Cruz before issuing a statement.

Cruz says the new statues would be paid for through grants and donations.
