The family of a Bridgeport man killed nearly one year ago was in court Thursday as his alleged killer went before a judge for the first time.
Azaya Stefurak, 21, of Bridgeport, appeared before a judge in the death of 23-year-old Thomas Asbury, who police say Stefurak shot on March 16 of last year. Asbury died in the hospital seven weeks later.
Stefurak's attorney argued for a lower bond, but the judge kept it at $1 million. He is due back in court next month.
Tammy Boyle is Asbury's aunt and was in the courtroom Thursday. She says she still has trouble to this day getting to sleep at night.
"A lot of nerves, emotions, mixed emotions, to where I want my nephew to be able to rest in peace," said Boyle.
Boyle says her family is still reeling a year later but is finding comfort from this arrest.
"I had the most confidence in the Bridgeport Police Department to handle what needed to be handled to let my nephew have justice," she said.
Police say Asbury was found with gunshot wounds in a parking lot on East Main Street in Bridgeport.
"He was a good kid. It was a great loss to the family," said Boyle.
