One the eve of World Mental Health Day, a Bridgeport man says his nephew has "a serious mental health condition" and should not be found guilty of stabbing him in the face on Sept. 26.
"I care about my nephew, and he didn't know what he was doing. He has a long history of mental health issues and he doesn't belong in prison," said the victim, who asked not to be identified.
Due to the sensitive nature of the case, News 12 is not identifying the suspect - but police say he is charged with first-degree assault and remains in the North Avenue Correctional Center awaiting trial.
The victim's other uncle, Luis Rios, said he agrees.
"When I arrived here at the Greene Homes Apartments the day of the attack, where the stabbing occurred, there was blood everywhere -but in spite of the horror of this whole situation, we as a family understand my nephew, and we want him to get help - not punishment," Rios said.
Dr. Dennis Bradley, Sr. is a mental health professional.
"We are all looking at this case with broken hearts - because we understand the dynamics of the situation. On the eve of World Mental Health Day, we urge families to understand the impact of mental health and to work with their loved ones who suffer under its terrible tragic weight -because it really does take a village," Dr. Bradley said.
