A Bridgeport police officer is in serious condition following a high speed chase through the city's East Side Wednesday.
Authorities say Sgt. Charles Johnson joined the chase after a fellow police officer tried to pull over a Jeep and that vehicle's driver, 24-year-old Anthony Poser, sped away. Johnson was called in as backup and began his pursuit.
Police say Poser slammed into Johnson's police cruiser during the chase and attempted to run away. He was later taken down by a police dog.
"He grabbed the dog by the neck and pretty much choked the dog," says Bridgeport Police Department Capt. Brian McCarthy. "With the assistance of the officers on scene, they were able to free the dog and take [Poser] into custody."
Bridgeport police officials say Sgt. Johnson was pinned inside his car after the chase and suffered a broken jaw, broken ankle and a sprained vertebra.
Poser remains in jail and is expected back in court later this month.
