State and local leaders honored a Bridgeport pastor on Sunday after she stepped up to fill a critical gap for hungry families.

Pastor Cecilia Garrett, of One Accord Ministry Outreach, started a food pantry in response to massive cuts to the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) program.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal said the venue is a lifeline for many families who lost their grocery benefits.

"Tragically, the federal government has abandoned a lot of its responsibilities for feeding people who are hungry and that's why what Pastor Garrett is doing here is so enormously meaningful and impactful," Blumenthal said.

"I just thank God for everyone that's coming out and supporting me," Garrett said.

The food pantry is located at 2484 East Main Street.
