One of Bridgeport?s most crime-ridden neighborhoods is getting financial help from the federal government.
The Hollow section of Bridgeport is one of 38 newly designated "Weed and Seed" sites identified in 20 states that have received grant money from the U.S. Department of Justice. In total, Bridgeport received $175,000 to fight crime and restore infrastructure
The money is specifically earmarked for community policing, and will be used to combat violent crime, drug trafficking and gang activity.
Some of the money will also go toward refurbishing portions of the Hollow. The money will also be used for mentoring, health care and cultural and recreational activities for the community.
Many long-time residents welcomed the news. They said the grant is a good step in the right direction. Others said they hope the money will create new businesses in Bridgeport.
