Bridgeport police said Sunday that after months of anticipation, the city's officers have finally begun using body cameras while on patrol.
As News 12 has reported, Bridgeport police wanted to add body cams to their list of standard equipment, and now the devices are officially in service.
Church and citizen groups had lobbied for body cams amid concerns about excessive force at police departments across the nation.
Chief AJ Perez says the devices improve safety and have been shown to reduce the number of physical encounters between police and the public.
Police say the pilot program is being funded by state and federal grants.
