When Bridgeport police swapped stories with a World War II veteran at a Dunkin’ and found out about his upcoming birthday, they decided to celebrate it with him.

On Feb.23, 96-year-old Kenneth Kelly thought that someone was trying to break into his apartment, but really it was six Bridgeport police officers standing outside with a birthday card. Inside the card was a $100 Dunkin’ gift card.

“So they remembered me, both of ‘em,” Kelly said, regarding meeting the police officers at his favorite Dunkin’ on Lafayette Boulevard a week prior. He added, “It staggered me, ya know? And they gave me the card with all their names, ya know? Shook my hand, wished me well.”

When asked about his secret to getting to 96 years of age, Kelly said his secret is the “man upstairs” and “having a warm heart.”
