Bridgeport Public Schools holds annual math meet
Organizers say students compete all year long in order to be selected for the meet.

Bridgeport Public Schools held its annual math meet competition Thursday at Sacred Heart University.
Over 130 students from the city's 22 middle schools participated.
During the competition, students had to solve math problems within a limited time frame using pencil and four-function calculators. The answers were scored between one and two points, with cumulative scores determining both individual and team winners.
Organizers say students compete all year long in order to be selected for the meet.
"We select all the middle schoolers, the three top eighth graders and the three top seventh graders from all the schools and they are actually competing for the top three prizes. Throughout the year, they have competitions at other schools to get a seat on the team," says Herminio Planas, director of mathematics.
Black Rock School won first place, followed by Multicultural Magnet and Geraldine Johnson.
Officials say the most improved school was Park City Magnet, which went from 18th place last year to fifth place this year.
The individual seventh-grade winner was Christopher Rivera from Black Rock School, who earned 14 out of 15 points. David Cuevas Marrero from Multicultural Magnet was the individual winner for eighth grade, winning 13 out of 15 points.
