When kids at Bridgeport's Fairchild Wheeler Interdistrict Multi-Magnet Campus go to the cafeteria this week, they'll be able to make a meal using a 'first-of-its-kind' machine that represents an unlikely marriage between high tech and salad.

"It's called the SerVue Touchless Salad Bar, and it's been my dream to bring it to Bridgeport Schools," Keoma Steele, a culinary-trained chef who's the director of Food & Nutrition for Bridgeport Public Schools, told News 12 Monday.

Bridgeport Public Schools are the first district in the Northeast to use the machines, which dispense salad ingredients automatically out of a refrigerated central compartment that keeps them at a uniform temperature to enhance food safety, Steele said.

"This is a great opportunity, a great journey, because a lot of the students here, they do not have a chance to get a healthy meal, and this system might encourage them to try a salad they might otherwise not try," Steele said.
