High school students in Bridgeport protested Monday against what they call a dangerous transportation situation ahead of the new school year.

Student members of Make the Road rallied outside during a Board of Education meeting. They say they want officials to realize the hardships they face getting to school.

Some children have to walk nearly 2 miles to school and say the trek puts them in danger.

According to researchers at Sacred Heart University, a study of the routes children take to get to school in Bridgeport received a failing grade. The study citied uneven pavement, poor lighting and tricky intersections.

"They are not doing their job, they are making us walk an hour or more," says freshman Tania Chapa. "People are walking to school when they are 7 and up and we don't want that, they are just little kids, something bad could happen."

Transportation in Bridgeport and other places in western Connecticut has faced cuts due to budget pressures.

News 12 reached out to the superintendent and the mayor’s office but has not heard back.
