A Bridgeport woman battling Stage 4 kidney disease could soon be homeless, though her doctors say she will never survive on the streets.
"It's like your world is crashing and you don't know what's going to happen,” says Magdala Cruz.
Cruz, 57, broke down while telling News 12 that she is fighting for her life and struggling to pay her rent.
She says she paid her landlord religiously for years but fell behind when she became critically ill and lost her job.
The landlord, who also lives in the house, has allowed Cruz to continue living there but is no longer able to afford such generosity.
Cruz tells News 12 that she receives less than $1,000 a month in benefits.
For more than a year, News 12 Connecticut and local leaders have been following Cruz's story, but so far she has not been able to get alternate housing.
"We're going to keep pushing, see if we can make this a situation that has a happier ending with a smooth transition,” says Mayor Joe Ganim.
