Bridgeport City Councilman Jorge Cruz said Wednesday the old PSEG coal-fired smokestack in Bridgeport Harbor will be demolished next April - and he says the date can't come quickly enough for him.

"I spoke with the developers today and they said they're going to demolish the bulk of this ugly facility later this month, and then the smokestack - which has long been the object of criticism and is known locally as an eyesore - will be torn down next April," Cruz said.

But not everybody wants the smokestack to be demolished.

"I really like it because it's a great guide for fishermen like me," Tony Malinodski said.

"But I know there's going to be a big development going up in its place, and that will be a good thing for the South End - so I guess it's a good thing," he said.
