A Bronx school has banned students from bringing cellphones onto school grounds, according to the Department of Education.
The English Language Learners and International Support Preparatory School, or ELLIS, for short is located on the John F. Kennedy Campus in Marble Hill.
The school has about 350 students, and according to the DOE, they aren't allowed to bring their cellphones on campus.
Students say the school is taking phones from them if they are caught with them out, and then giving them back at the end of the day.
However, some students are avoiding the hassle by checking their phones at bodegas for about $1 a day.
A cellphone ban was lifted at schools by Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2015.
However, the DOE says each school has the ability to enforce its own policy regarding cellphone use.
