Suffolk County officials are urging residents to conserve water during the morning hours.
The plea from the Town of Brookhaven and Suffolk County Water Authority officials come as parts of Long Island face a severe drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.
Residents are being urged to voluntarily limit their exterior water supplies in the morning hours.
"We are asking you to shift the way you use water. If you sprinkle your lawns, please don't do it between 3 a.m. and 9 a.m. Try to do it in the afternoon or late evening - even better," says Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine.
Officials say local water towers are being drained during early hours - hurting both the water supply and pressure.
The water authority says 70% of water pumped throughout the year is used during the summer months.
