A car fire on Wednesday afternoon led to an acre-long brush fire on the Merritt Parkway in New Canaan, fire officials said.
The vehicle caught fire on the ramp onto Old Stamford Road.
Flames spread to the southbound side of the Merritt Parkway, igniting a brush fire that extended up the embankment into the woods behind a leaf compost site on Lapham Road.
Firefighters fully extinguished the car, and the driver escaped without injuries.
Fire departments from Noroton Heights, Darien and Pound Ridge assisted New Canaan firefighters. The brush fire was completely extinguished after four hours.
Officials reminded drivers to avoid discarding smoking materials from car windows or into organic material around homes.
