The Census Bureau says the size of new homes may be shrinking for the first time in 15 years, and they are roughly 7 percent smaller.
Connecticut builders say they are adapting their plans to follow the trend toward smaller homes. Don Young, a builder, says his customers want smaller homes to save money but want to keep luxuries.
Four-bedroom condos in downtown Greenwich are less than half the size of a McMansion, Young says, and cost millions of dollars less. They are said to have environmentally friendly amenities that reduce heating and cooling costs.
