A student celebration following the UConn men's basketball NCAA championship win Monday night ended in destruction on the university's main campus in Storrs.
Rowdiness ensued following a watch party at Gampel Pavilion, resulting in injuries and arrests.
Some students were seen taking down lampposts. Windows and a door were smashed. Street signs were damaged, trees were uprooted, a car was flipped and dumpsters and benches were lit on fire.
In an email to News 12, university spokesperson Stephanie Reitz said:
"The vast majority of those celebrating the Husky victory last night did so safely and responsibly. A small number chose to risk their safety and that of others by vandalizing or destroying property after the game. UConn Police will investigate the vandalism and other potential criminal offenses that occurred. Those responsible will face arrest and, if they are students, sanctions up to and including expulsion.”
Reitz says 15 people were arrested and "charged with various crimes," adding most of the people arrested are UConn students. Reitz says 16 people were taken to the hospital for injuries "not considered to be significant.”
Damage estimates are still being determined. No classes were canceled Tuesday.
