In Chef's Quick Tips, News 12's Tina Redwine learns how to make a Stars and Stripes Fourth of July trifle from Chef Nikki Glekas, of Nikki’s Modern Mediterranean.
INGREDIENTS:
- 2 loaves angel food cake
- 2 8-ounce containers Cool Whip, at room temperature
- 2 cups sliced strawberries
- 2 cups blueberries
- Star cookie cutter
- Sparkler candles for the cake
DIRECTIONS:
1. Crumble 1 of the angel food cakes into large chunks and keep them in a large bowl.
2. Use a sharp knife to split the second cake until three horizontal pieces. Use the star cookie cutter to cut the angelfood cake into large stars.
3. Cover the bottom of the trifle bowl with angel food cake. Spoon a layer of Cool Whip on top. Arrange a layer of sliced strawberries on top of the Cool Whip and press them against the side of the trifle bowl so you can see the layer. Place the blueberries on top of the strawberries and make sure you can see them on the edge of the bowl as well.
4. Place the stars on top of the berries and place them around the edges of the bowl, then fill in the middle with the cake.
5. On the very top of the cake spread another layer of Cool Whip and add more berries to make it red, white and blue.
6. Place sparklers on top and light them when the party is ready to start!
