Cleanup of Allied Signal site hot topic at Stratford Town meeting
The Stratford Town Council met with the U.S. Army Thursday to discuss the future development of the former Allied Signal Plant. The more than 70-acre facility was once used to make Army tank engines and is heavily contaminated. Cleanup of the property could cost anywhere from $60 million to $100 million. Some members of the council are concerned about who will foot the bill for the massive cleanup.
The Army responded to concerns, claiming the developer would be able to use the equity in the property to finance the cleanup. Some council members say they don't believe there's enough equity to do that, but Mayor Jim Miron says it will get cleaned up no matter what.
