Outgoing New York City Comptroller Brad Lander officially launched his campaign for Congress on Wednesday, kicking off a primary challenge against Rep. Dan Goldman in New York’s 10th Congressional District.

Lander announced his run in a campaign video and at Nitehawk Cinema in Park Slope, where more than a hundred supporters gathered to hear his announcement.

“This moment right now is a five-alarm fire for our democracy,” Lander told the crowd.

The video highlights Lander’s long history in public service, from his early years as a housing organizer to his time on the City Council, his current role as comptroller and, more recently, his run for mayor.

“We’re going to fight Trump’s corruption and hold people accountable,” he told the crowd. “We’re not going to let our country be turned over to people who are putting all the resources in their pockets while workers can’t afford their health care, child care or housing.”

Lander has been a vocal supporter of Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani since his own mayoral campaign ended. He says he hopes to serve as an ally to Mamdani in Congress.

“This is a time for leaders who will fight and not fold,” he said.

Lander enters the race with high-profile endorsements, including Mamdani, Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and the Working Families Party.

Williams praised Lander’s leadership, saying, “You have to have the courage to match the fear of the moment, and I’ve seen Brad have that time and time again.”

Lander told the audience he intends to represent the entire district, including those who may disagree with him.

“A 'Mister Rogers' with a steel spine,” he said.
