The Bridgeport Bluefish are leaving the Ballpark at Harbor Yard to make way for a new concert venue following 20 seasons in the city.
Mayor Joe Ganim and the city announced plans Monday night to turn the ballpark into a state-of-the-art amphitheater for concerts with a price tag of $15 million.
Bluefish owner Frank Boulton told News 12 Connecticut by phone Tuesday that he was disappointed to hear the city decided to go in a different direction. Poor attendance has not helped the team, and the city says it is looking for more ways to revitalize its downtown.
Each summer, Live Nation Entertainment plans to bring 25 events featuring some of the biggest names in the music business to the stadium.
The Ballpark at Harbor Yard has hosted high school championships and college baseball from Sacred Heart University, which already has plans for a new field on campus.
But the Bluefish have been the stadium's main draw and are now looking for a new home.
"A lot of people will miss the Bluefish," says general manager Paul Herrmann. "For the last 20 years, it's been in a lot of people's hearts."
A new amphitheater is pending the approval of City Council, which will probably take up the matter in September. Ganim says he hopes the venue can open next summer.
According to ownership, the Bluefish will stay in the Atlantic League but possibly move to New York, New Jersey or Texas.
The first-place team has 20 remaining home games this season.
