A major winter storm is expected to bring heavy snow and bitter cold as Connecticut activates its severe cold weather protocol.

State officials say the protocol is now active and will remain in effect until noon next Wednesday. Gov. Ned Lamont and transportation officials spoke Friday afternoon, urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel, get supplies now, and check on vulnerable family members and neighbors.

He urged people to stay off the roads Sunday unless absolutely necessary and to avoid travel early Monday morning if possible.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation says its fleet of more than 650 snowplows and specialized snow removal vehicles is ready to deploy statewide. Officials say more than 900 drivers will work 12-hour shifts to clear roads.

Connecticut officials say the state is coordinating with neighboring states regarding possible travel bans, but no decisions have been made. Anyone in need of shelter or access to warming centers can find help and resources through 211.
