A Connecticut nonprofit encouraged volunteers on Saturday to join their program that chaperones older adults.
The Agency on Aging of South Central Connecticut urgently needs volunteers to accompany them to medical appointments.
They are hoping to find recruits in Greenwich, Stamford, Bridgeport, Milford and Orange.
"Medical appointments can be daunting for anyone, especially for older adults who have impaired mobility," said the organization's Beverly Kidder. "We at the Agency of South Central Connecticut are in desperate need of volunteers... They don't have to provide transportation. Just be with them from their apartment to the medical appointment, throughout the appointment, and... to their home so that the individual is not alone as they try to go through the medical system."
The group said many older adults do not keep medical appointments because the process of getting there can be overwhelming. They said it is a reality that often leads to unnecessary hospitalizations.
