Connecticut is over 1,000 miles away from Florida, but many local residents are still feeling devastated over the building that collapsed near Miami.
Leah Shemtov, an executive co-director at Stamford Chabad, says she knew two residents of the building who have gone missing in the incident – Tzvi and Itty Ainsworth.
"Their daughter-in-law is a family friend that we grew up with, all the way in South Africa,” Shemtov says. “The hope, the anticipation, the fear, the despair…it’s all very real.”
The couple belongs to the Shul of Bal Harbour. They are two of several members from the Surfside synagogue who went missing.
A man from Greenwich also told News 12 his childhood best friend and best man at his wedding is among the missing.
Over 100 people are still unaccounted for.
