The state Supreme Court Thursday heard arguments and issued a ruling on whether a 17-year-old girl with cancer has the right to refuse chemotherapy.

After less than an hour of arguments, the justices announced they have sided with the state, saying the rights of a 17-year-old girl are not being violated by forcing her to get chemotherapy.

The girl, who is known as Cassandra C in court documents, is currently being held in state custody.

Cassandra, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in September of 2014, will turn 18 later this year. Cassandra is currently receiving treatment, but does not want it.

Doctors say Cassandra has a 85 percent chance of survival if she undergoes six months of chemotherapy treatment.

Cassandra's attorneys argue that she is mature enough to make her own decisions, but the justices unanimously agreed with the lower court ruling. The ruling states that Cassandra's behavior does not show she is capable of making such a decision.
