The state Board of Education voted on Wednesday to partially take over Bridgeport’s Public Schools.
Connecticut's education commissioner now has "sweeping powers" to oversee Bridgeport Public Schools.
This includes the authority to appoint a new superintendent.
The new superintendent will be appointed for a term of up to one year, with the possibility of it being extended, according to the state.
The state board is also requiring the Bridgeport’s Board of Education to undergo training "designed to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness."
The district has seen soaring budget deficits and recently cut almost 80 jobs.
