Court documents: Bridgeport suspect who tried to flee country admitted killing estranged girlfriend

Court documents show a Bridgeport suspect, who tried to flee the country, admitted to killing his estranged girlfriend.
Corey Ramos' arrest warrant includes allegations a neighbor previously heard him threaten to kill the victim and a confession from Ramos that he, in fact, went through with that.
He was arraigned Monday for the killing of Jennifer Brelsford, his estranged girlfriend with whom he shared a 3-year-old son.
Police found Brelsford dead in her apartment on Oct. 18. Her neck had been cut with a razor, and her purse strap was wrapped around her neck as well.
"We initially got called from the victim's mother because she hadn't heard from her daughter for several hours and that behavior was unusual... that she wouldn't pick up her phone," says Capt. Brian Fitzgerald, of the Bridgeport Police Department.
Ramos was quickly named a suspect as officers learned from Brelsford's family about his alleged volatile, abusive history over the years.
"We fought like heck to get her out of this relationship," says Melissa Ruminot, Brelsford's cousin.
In the week before Brelsford's death, two protective orders were issued against Ramos - prohibiting him to have contact with Brelsford after a domestic dispute in West Haven.
Police immediately got an arrest warrant for him on grounds he violated those orders. Ramos was captured the following night after illegally crossing into Canada from Vermont.
"The information that we put out was relayed across multiple law enforcement agencies all the way up to the Canadian border, and because they had that information, became aware of what was going on in Bridgeport and were able to assist us," Fitzgerald says.
Ramos' arrest warrant shows he confessed to the slaying.
“Ramos told detectives that Brelsford opened the door and was going to scream to neighbors for assistance in an attempt to get him arrested for violating the protective orders in place. Ramos stated he put his arm around her neck in an attempt to stop her. Ramos stated he was holding a type of cutting tool when he put his arm around Brelsford's neck and she got cut by it. Ramos stated he also put a purse around her neck. Ramos stated Brelsford was still alive when he fled from the scene,” the arrest warrant reads.
The judge set Ramos' bond at $1.5 million. Besides this case and the domestic dispute in West Haven, he also has an ongoing sexual assault case out of Vermont.
