Falls are killing thousands of older Americans each year. In response, a Connecticut-based medical supplier is working to do what it can to keep seniors safe.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than 32,000 older adults die each year due to falls.
Ruth Watson, 81, of Bridgeport, leads an independent life, but she knows that accidents can happen. So, she wears a medical alert device from Assisted Living Technologies.
The company was founded in Connecticut a decade ago and serves seniors and people with special needs nationwide.
“Sometimes, people don't need personal care for 24 hours or even eight hours. They just need a little means to call for help or to give them a cue to take their medication, so that's what we're here for,” says Assisted Living Technologies vice president Nick D’Aquila.
They offer a smartwatch and a product called the “teardrop” that keeps those who need a little backup just a button press away from help.
Assisted Living Technologies has thousands of clients in Connecticut alone and is currently raising awareness of its product’s usefulness as part of Home Safety Month.
"People don't realize it, but it's a blessing to have,” says Watson.
The systems cost around $50 a month, but there’s also a waiver program available through the state for those who need financial help.
