Connecticut's House of Representatives approved an amended tax plan Wednesday night, despite the governor's promise to veto the measure.

The plan, which calls for raising taxes on the wealthy and lowering rates for middle and lower class taxpayers, is now off to the Senate for approval. The revised version also includes a temporary repeal of the 25-cent-per-gallon gas tax.

House Republican leaders have tried several times to bring a gas tax holiday to a vote, but Speaker of the House Jim Amann (D) dismissed the plan as an irresponsible scheme. However, Speaker Amann says it was added to the measure to show a compromise.

Governor Jodi Rell (R-CT) says she will veto any plan that includes tax increases, since the state is looking at a nearly $900 million surplus.
