A state legislator is pushing a bill that would cap Connecticut's "hidden" gas tax as the price per gallon creeps toward $4. Sen. Len Suzio (R-Meriden) says the proposal will help slow the constant price hikes in place since the beginning of the year. It would tackle the 7-percent receipts tax and chop 8 to 10 cents from current prices, supporters say. However, opponents debate whether a tax cap would actually translate to lower prices at the pump. Sen. Carlo Leone (D-Stamford/Darien) sits on the Transportation Committee, and says the elimination of zone pricing might be a more effective solution. A public hearing is expected to be held within the next three weeks.
