Two state senators are calling for an independent investigation into the licensing procedures for school bus drivers.
Senators Don DeFronzo (D-6th District) and Thomas Gaffey (D-13th District) released two memos Tuesday from the Department of Motor Vehicles. The memos outline a policy of not granting temporary licenses to drivers before background checks are complete, and then rescinding that policy six months later. The senators say these memos were intentionally withheld from a supposed "comprehensive" report given to the governor and the Legislature last month.
The call for an investigation stems from the fallout of an accident last fall in West Hartford where a pedestrian was hit and killed by a school bus. Police later said the driver had cocaine in his system and had a criminal past that should have disqualified him from getting a license.
