The town of Darien gathered at the town's 9/11 Monument in the courtyard behind Middlesex Middle School Thursday morning to honor the thousands of lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001.
Speakers discussed the importance of remembering the sacrifices of those who lost their lives.
Darien's 9/11 monument was designed by a Darien high school student.
"He decided he really felt strongly that something needed to be done," said U.S. Navy Captain Sueann Shorr. "Something permanent needed to be here to help us never forget so as part of his Eagle Scout project he created this monument."
Schorr said it's important to build monuments so people can understand what happened in the past and can work toward a peaceful future.
